Glossary of Terms
ANSI -
American National Standards Institute. Coordinator and clearing
house for information on US Standards.
ANSI X12 -
The ANSI accredited standards committee for inter industry.
EDI standards for business transactions.
ASC -
Accredited Standards Committee. Established by ANSI in 1979
to develop uniform standards for EDI. These standards are referred
to as "X12".
ASN -
Advance Ship Notice (856). This transaction set sends information
on product to be shipped to the intended receiver.
DISA -
Data Interchange Standards Association. The secretariat for
ASC X12.
EDI -
Electronic Data Interchange. An electronic exchange of business
documents. Usually between business application systems without
human intervention.
EDIFACT -
International EDI Standards.
Extensible Markup
Language (XML) - a subset of standard generalized
markup language (SGML). XML provides a format for representing
data, a schema for distinguishing and describing data structures,
and a mechanism for extending and annotating HTML.
EFT -
Electronic Funds Transfer. An electronic exchange of money,
sometimes including supporting information such as remittance
advice.
Electronic Commerce -
A term used to refer to the collection of electronic tools
used in business. It includes EDI, EFT, Mail enabled applications,
the Internet and more.
Enveloping -
EDI documents are sandwiched between 'envelope' records, containing
the sender and receiver identification numbers.
Functional Acknowledgement (997)
- A confirmation back to the sending party of a transmission
to acknowledge that the transmission was received.
Global Location
Number (GLN) - 13 digit number that uniquely identifies
each location in a trading partners enterprise. The GLIN
will be replacing the DUNS+4.
Global Trade
Item Number (GTIN) - 14 digit data structure to uniquely
identify trade items (products and services at a consumer
unit level). The GTIN will eventually replace the UPC code.
Every level of product configuration (consumer selling unit,
case, inner pack, pallet, shipper, etc.) require a unique
GTIN.
Segment -
A small group of information akin to a 'record' in a file.
Trading Partner -
Business Partners utilizing ECommerce to electronically trade
business documents.
Transaction Set -
An EDI document. A Purchase Order (850) is a transaction set.
Translator -
Translation software. Translation software is needed to change
X12 or other formats of information into a format expected
by the business application.
Uniform Code
Council (UCC) - Involved with development and maintenance
of UCS standards. Assigns UCS identification numbers and
UPC codes.
Universal Council
Code Network (UCCnet) - a subsidiary of the Uniform
Code Council, Inc. and is responsible for providing a universal
foundation for Internet electronic commerce. Through its
support of global EAN UCC standards, UCCnet delivers an open
platform for collaborative commerce services, including compliance
verification, synchronization of product information, registry
and life cycle management of synchronized products, user
locations and user trade capabilities. UCCnet provides implementation
methodology, allowing small, medium and large enterprises
to integrate ECommerce into their business in a swift and
efficient manner.
Uniform Communication
Standard (UCS) - EDI standard primarily used in grocery
industry. Defines the message format and telecommunications
for EDI.
Value Added Network (VAN)
- An electronic post office with value added services such
as protocol conversion, message distribution, security and
audit reporting.
